Eugene Gunn, has been known to me personally and the practice of Scott Tallon Walker for the past 40 years. I initially met Eugene during his time as a senior designer for the steel window company Smith and Pearson circa 1966. From the outset we were aware of Eugene's design ability, which was of immense help during the initial and conceptual stages of window and facade design. This passion has continued since the formation of his own company Gunn Lennon Fabrications Ltd some 22 years ago. Eugene’s desire for buildability and robust design, while achieving the architectural intent has led to a very successful working collaboration between Gunn Lennon Fabrications and the office of Scott Tallon Walker over the past four decades.

Gunn Lennon Fabrications (GLF) served as the facade subcontractor for the College Square development, playing a pivotal role in realising the architectural vision for this complex urban project. From the outset, the GLF team established a collaborative atmosphere, with weekly design workshops becoming cross discipline problem-solving adventures. GLF offered pragmatic robust solutions, never having to be reminded of the “design intent”. Their technical adeptness was particularly evident in the execution of the unique glazed terracotta facade. The bespoke tile profiles integrated into a unitised curtain wall system, demanded significant precision and quality control, dealing with a material subject to dimensional and visual tolerances. On site, the process was smooth, with the diligence of factory fabrication, brought to site, and the same level of pro-active problem solving and attention to detail. This is not said flippantly, after all, as the Republic of Ireland’s tallest habitable building, the quality of work is visible from around the city! GLF’s contribution was fundamental to delivering a facade that stands as the defining architectural feature of College Square. I genuinely look forward to collaborating with GLF on future projects.

BDA have worked for many years with Gunn Lennon on some of the most remarkable buildings in Dublin and its surrounds. We have always found their team to be very professional, able, and willing to take on the challenges the projects have presented. For College Square, the complexity of the facade required incorporating large, unitised curtain wall panels, floor to ceiling high performance glass units and bespoke glazed terracotta tiles, all in a selection of bold colours. The facade created many engineering and design challenges during the design development stage and on through to fabrication, and finally on site for installation. All issues were met head on by GLF in full collaboration with the Design Team, for the successful execution of this monumental building in the heart of the city, which currently stands as Irelands tallest residential building.
